DENTAL TOURISM SAVES SENIORS BIG MONEY - Have a Denture Adventure!

Seniors can save big money going abroad on a dental holiday. But one needs to do their homework before getting on that boat or plane for your dental holiday.

Bangkok, Cabo and Manila dentists are popular dental tourism destinations - but most fly rather than cruise.. Besides - most cruise ships are only a day or so in any given port - not long enough for any substantial dentistry that requires lab time between appointments.

Baby Boomers,  +55,  seniors -  that ever growing segment of the US population are now going offshore in droves seeking  affordable  dentistry in  Mexico  and Asia.    They  are hoping to find good  quality  dental  care  away  from  home and are usually happy with their  results   - but  not always.

Many are lured into clinics  owned  and  operated  by  general dentists who  in many developing nations such as Mexico -  are  permitted  to learn  advanced dental  procedures at the patient’s expense.

Expensive procedures  such as dental implants,  mini implants and cosmetic dental makeovers are often half  or less than  the cost for the same procedures back in the US,  Canada  or  other developed  nations.

You can save up to 75% on your dentistry in Manila, Bangkok or Mexico.

Mexican or Manila dental clinics can easily save seniors $10,000 to $30,000us on a full-mouth oral restoration.

And it's easy to lose that much if you chance on a general dentist to do your dental work instead of board certified dentist who has the years of additional formal training in specialist school necessary for the advanced dental procedures involved.

Mexico dentists - Los Algodones, Tijuana and other Mexican border towns are popular for US dental tourists driving across the border.  If one is having a root canal or crown and you live within a couple hours drive of the border, and you are ok with border traffic waits - this makes sense.

Cabo, Los Cabos, Cancun - If you are planning on a larger treatment requiring a couple or visits to the clinic requiring a week or more stay - you would be wise to consider taking a dental vacation to a first-class Mexican beach resort town such as Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta or Cancun.

Puerto Vallarta dentists are especially popular with seniors as PV is less touristy, much more traditional and tranquil than the vacation hot spots Cabo and Cancun.

Cabo Surf Hotel, Cabo San Lucas Mexico 5-Star dining overlooking the surf breaks is a favorite place to stay when having a Mexico dental vacation.

Costa Rica Dentist - Some go further to Costa Rica or Brazil but the additional airfare can negate one’s savings on dentistry unless you are having a larger treatment.

Also consider visiting a Manila or Bangkok dentist. They are even less expensive than Mexican dentists and Manila dentists speak perfect English as American English is the national language in the Philippines.

The dental holiday experience for those who have not visited Asia is priceless.

San Diego California is one of America’s favorite vacation spots and is just across the border from Tijuana Mexico. You stay and play in San Diego while you have your dentistry 15 minutes down the road with a Tijuana dentist.

Patients visiting a Tijuana dentist often stay in San Diego just 15 mins. up the hwy.

Bangkok Thailand offers one multi-story dental hospitals with a veritable buffet of amenities including kids playrooms, internet cafes, restaurants and lodging. Bangkok and Manila dentists have been popular with Europeans, Brits and Aussies for decades.

Thai and Manila dentists are the most popular in Asia for dental tourism.

Manila dentists have become more popular than Thai dentists most recently due to increased promotion of Philippine tourism by the government highlighted by their catchy slogan - "It's More Fun in the Philippines," and an equal lack of promotion by the Thai government which declared martial law in June 2014 after 2 years of political instability.

The Philippines - Americans especially feel at home in the Philippines and the country is the most Americanized country outside of the US.  Filipinos love Americans and all things American from the movies to US sports celebs. Kobe Bryant is big with youth here right now.

Turkey has become popular with senior dental tourists arriving from Western Europe as it offers prices that are far lower than most countries in the European developed nations and features a unique history and culture for one to experience.

However Turkey is now becoming a less-than-desirable tourist destination due to the serious conflict in nearby Syria and Iraq.

Dental tourists like any other tourists need to be aware of the ever changing political climates in other nations when traveling abroad.

Expect airport delays due to higher levels of security, portions of towns can be blockaded by demonstrators or authorities all combining to make for a real denture adventure most would rather avoid.

BARGAIN PRICE MEDICAL & DENTAL TOURISM - Your Doctor's Worst Nightmare

Mexico, Thailand and the Philippines are some of the biggest medical and dental tourism destinations.

·         EDITORIAL
·         HERALD SUN
·         MARCH 25, 2014 12:00AM

MEDICAL AND DENTAL Tourism is becoming a global industry much the same as other commodities imported and exported abroad.
Cost is king in this world order and technological advances mean a growing number of cosmetic dental and plastic surgeries are being carried out in developing economies throughout Asia.
Cosmetic dentistry and elective plastic surgery can be hugely expensive and the evolving cultural acceptance of having a facelift, breast augmentation or extensive oral restoration has seen more and more Australians taking off overseas for their chosen makeover.
An estimated 15,000 Australians — believed to be a conservative figure — travel overseas each year for so-called medical tourism.
Many head to Thailand or Philippine doctors and dentists to undergo breast enlargement or reduction and a range of specialist dental procedures from cosmetic dentistry to dental implants and oral surgery.

Bangkok dentists are almost outnumbered by the Buddhist temples (over 400)

A University of Technology Sydney study by Dr Meredith Jones last year found Australians were spending anything from $6000 to $20,000, including flights and accommodation, to undergo cosmetic dentistry and plastic surgeries overseas.
But the emerging medical export markets in Southeast Asia and India have not been without their risks.

DENTAL TOURISM FAQ'S & STATISTICS BY CNBC, THOMSON - REUTERS

Dental Tourism Report by CNBC

Medical and dental tourism — where patients struggling to afford or find the right treatment at home head overseas — is booming, with many countries jostling to offer high-quality health care at a good price. In 2013, around 900,000 Americans traveled overseas for treatment. And that number looks set to increase: 50 million Americans were either uninsured or underinsured for health care in 2013, according to the U.S.'s Medical Tourism Resource Guide.
However, health tourism is not the preserve of Americans — around 8 million patients from across the world seek overseas treatment each year, contributing to a global industry worth $24-$40 billion, says Patients Beyond Borders.

Reasons other than cost to travel overseas for health care include better treatment, as well as avoiding long waiting lists and dodging questions from colleagues and family.
Dentistry and cosmetic treatments in particular are commonly sought abroad.  The most popular destinations for health care tourism, according to providers including Patients Beyond Borders and consultancies such as Deloitte include Mexico, Thailand and the Philippines.

In Mexico Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Tijuana/San Diego and Manila are among the most visited for dental tourism with Manila dentists nearly surpassing Bangkok due to ongoing political conflict in Thailand and martial law being declared in June 2014.

LOS ALGODONES DENTISTS - Popular Dental Tourism Destination for Arizona Daytrippers by NPR

Los Algodones Mexico Dental Tourism by National Public Radio

Mexico's 2010 census counted fewer than 5,500 residents in Los Algodones, but more than 350 dentists ply their trade here, serving mostly Arizona patients seeking affordable procedures.

Sitting in a dentist's chair is hardly rates as a dental vacation. But every year, tens of thousands of people go to a tiny border town south of Yuma, Ariz., that has proclaimed itself the dental capital of Mexico.

Los Algodones is a virtual dental factory. Some 350 dentists work within a few blocks of downtown Algodones. Most patients come for major work.

"Oh boy, I had 22 crowns done, four root canals," says Brian Quade. He is still numb from the Novocain. His mouth is bloody. "Nine hours straight yesterday and then today they did a deep-cleaning scaling and tomorrow they're installing all the crowns."

What could possibly make those three, jaw-dropping days so appealing?

"It's $50,000 back home in the US and about $5,000 down here," he says.

It's inexpensive; it averages two-thirds less than in the U.S. And it's quick. There are so many dental labs in town, it only takes a day or two to make a crown, a bridge, even dentures.

A long line of patients sit in the hallway of the Sani Dental Group clinic opposite a long line of exam rooms. Miguel Ibarreche — known to patients as Dr. Mike — runs the clinic's diagnostic department. He looks in patient's mouths, tells them what they need to have done and how much it will cost. The most common procedures patients get done here are implants and crowns, Ibarreche says.

He says dentistry is cheap here for some obvious reasons — inexpensive labor and real estate. He also says dentists in Mexico don't need to charge as much because they don't graduate with a lot of student debt. The government subsidizes many dentists' education.

"When we go out of school we have to pay the government, but we do it by one year of free service in a government clinic and that's it," Ibarreche says.

There's also no high-priced mandatory malpractice insurance as there is in the U.S.

Edmund Hewlett, a spokesman for the American Dental Association and a professor at UCLA, says Mexico has good dentists. But he warns potential patients to make sure they're getting a good one.

"A good Los Algodones dentist is any Board Certified Los Algodones dentist that has had several years of advanced specialist training for dental implants, crowns, veneers,  root canals, oral surgery, oral restorations etc."   -ed

"My best advice is to plan very carefully ... and know what you are signing up for. What are the standards that are in place, say for regulation of the dentists in that country. What sort of safety guidelines are in place in the offices?" he says.

There are still some hawkers in the street as you enter Los Algodones who try to lure patients in, but not like decades ago when dentists began marketing to U.S. and Canadian patients. These days there are companies online that arrange trips.

That's how Ron Colvin came to Los Algodones. "Somebody told me about dental tourism and then research on the Internet and more research on the Internet and then more research on the Internet," Colvin says.

Colvin picked his Los Algodones dentist based on hundreds of online reviews. He came from Indiana for dentures. He just had his teeth pulled, and he's happy with how it went.

Most people who travel to Los Algodones need a lot of dental work. That makes the town both a destination for dental tourism — and a reminder to floss and brush so you can avoid the place.

Photo: Cabo Surf Hotel  -  A Puerto Vallarta,  Cancun,  Guadalajara, Tijuana/San Diego or  Cabo dental vacation  will have roughly the same travel and lodging  expenses as Yuma/Los Algodones if you are flying in from outside Arizona.
And the vacation part is priceless!

"What foreign patients do not realize is that unless they are living in nearby Arizona  -  they can fly to Cabo, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta  or even  Tijuana/San Diego  and have a world-class dental vacation with airfares and hotel prices being roughly the same as getting to and staying in Los Algodones.

Yuma and Los Algodones are not places one wants to write home about or enjoy a vacation in.

Salud (Health) - the Mexican  health care ministry shut down about 20% of border town dental clinics several years ago. Many were being operated by non-dentists, non-present dentists, illegal unlicensed immigrants from Central America and even Mexican dental school dropouts.

Over 85% of  Los Algodones (and Mexican dentists overall) are only general dentists according to the Mexican Dental Association.

Always search for a board certified dentist when having important dentistry in Mexico and you will be sure to get superior dentistry for the same price as a much less-skilled general dentist who is learning advanced dentistry by practicing on you!  -ed

CHOICE INC Investigates Asia Dental Tourism

The Great Awakening of Asia Dental Tourism

Philippine dental patients have over 7,000 islands to explore or just kickback on..

CHOICE investigates why some patients are taking dental holidays going to dentists in Asia to save money on their dental treatment.

Dental Tourism

As dental costs continue to rise, some people are choosing dental holidays abroad for treatment instead.
With reported savings of up to 75% in some countries, it’s not surprising a growing number of people are packing their bags to chase cheap dentistry overseas.

In this report we look at:

·         What the overseas options are
·         What the downsides and dangers are
·         The growing dental crisis in Australia
·         Some case studies from home and away
·         What to look out for

There are few things in life worse than a trip to the dentist. Some might say the only thing worse is paying the bill. Worse yet, though, is not being able to afford to go at all. Because of this a growing number of Westerners are considering seeking cheaper dental treatment overseas.

And if you’re up for it, there are plenty of medical tourism agencies to help you on your way. Many offer a range of medical options – from cosmetic surgery to elective surgery, eye surgery and fertility treatment while others specialise in one area such as dental.

These agencies will organise your flights, accommodation and even sightseeing (though not travel insurance should a procedure go wrong). They will provide advice on hospitals regarding their success rates and complications for treatment and whether they are accredited by organisations such as the International Organization for Standardizations or the Joint Commission International.

It all sounds pretty tempting, but is dental tourism too good to be true?

Popular Dental Tourism Overseas Destinations

India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Turkey and Mexico are just some of the exotic global destinations on offer for medical tourism. For Australians, the most popular destinations for dental work are Manila and Bangkok. (Update – Manila has just surpassed Thailand due to martial law being declared in Jun. 2014). -ed

Barbara Sherriff, who owns a Queensland travel agency, specialises in sending clients to Asia for dental work, cosmetic surgery and laser eye surgery.

Mr. Sherriff says her travel business came about as a result of her husband’s dental woes. “He needed substantial dental treatment and was quoted $26,000, which was just far too much.”

Clients are asked as to why they’re choosing overseas destinations for their dental care, and the answer is always the same.

“It’s the high cost of dentistry in Australia. I have seen patients who’ve been quoted over $60,000 for substantial work and simply cannot afford to have it done in by a Queensland or Sydney cosmetic dentist.

Ms. Cassandra Italia who owns another agency that sends dental patients from Australian to a variety of countries for care says: “Dental tourism is huge, and the driving factor is cost,” she says. “Even if people make it a dental holiday at the same time they will normally find they still come out better off financially.”

                                           Bangkok dental clinic

The Board Certified Asia Dental Association notes that since the military lock-down of Bangkok, the primary destination for foreign patients has switched to Manila. American English is the national language, "so patients don’t have to know how to say “Ouch” in Malay, Cantonese or Vietnamese" says the Association spokeswoman Sandra Jamala.

“We ensure our dentists are certified for the treatments the dental tourist goes abroad for. The most popular being dental implants, min implants, veneers, orthodontics, oral surgery and cosmetic dentistry.”

"The Association offers the dental tourist vetting of certified dentists, resumes, referrals, cost estimates, appointment setting, ground transportation and dental holidays information. We annually send hundreds of Westerners to dentists in Manila, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore, New Delhi and even Mexico."

Board Certified Asia Dental Association  services are without cost to patients.  -ed

DENTAL HOLIDAYS IN ASIA for Affordable Dental Implants, Cosmetic Dentistry and More!

Asia Dental Holidays  by  the  Board Certified Asia Dentist Association
Inexpensive dentistry from dental implants and cosmetic dentistry to oral surgery can be found at Bangkok and Manila dentists.

You can have some incredible experiences when you visit a Thai dentist

A board certified trained Philippine dentist costs the same as general dentists who lack the added specialist training according to a recent survey by the Royal Hong Kong Dental Association.
Manila offers certified dentists who offer superior dental tourism services at affordable prices. It is perhaps due to the low cost of living, and staff costs by which Philippine dentists can readily provide top-notch inexpensive dental services compared to others in the same survey.
Other Asian dental holiday destinations such as Korea, Japan and Hong Kong were among the most expensive dental travel countries due to the high cost of living - especially rents, with treatments being as high as in some Western  cities.
The Hong Kong, American and Mexican dental associations all agree that it is always best to insist on certified dentists when traveling abroad for dental care for the best results, your safety and comfort.

This is not a problem in most Western developed nations where one has to be a licensed certified specialist to perform root canals, veneers and implants - but not so in Thailand, China, Vietnam and some others. Be safe and go with a certified dentist in Asia - they usually cost about the same as a much less skilled general dentist anyway.

Manila and Bangkok dental clinics often have the same equipment and supplies as Western clinics ordered from the same international dental supply houses.

Seek advice from trusted professional dental travel agencies that offer certified specialist dentists. But be wary of them as they don’t always have the will, resources or know-how to vet dentists in a foreign country any more than you.
Stories of nightmarish dental experiences have become the stuff legends are made of for Westerners who avail services from general dentists in Asia and in Mexico, unaware of the serious differences between a general dentist and a certified dentist. And more importantly, in many countries - general dentists are permitted by custom to learn advanced dentistry on-the-job!
The nice surprise for dental tourists visiting Manila is that American English is the national language. You don’t have to know how to say “ouch” in Maylay or Mandarin.  Australians, Americans and Brits are the biggest visitors to Manila according to Board Certified Asia Dentist Association's spokeswoman Sandra Jamala. "Australian dentists send us a lot of patients who can't afford a Sydney cosmetic dentist or Brisbane dental implant."
The Hong Kong survey indicated Thailand and the Philippines as the most popular destinations for dental holidays. Certified dentists from these countries offer a wide range of dental treatments such as crowns, bridges, dental surgery, cosmetic dentistry and dental implants at a price far less than with their US, UK or Australia dentist often using the same materials and equipment ordered from the same international dental supply houses.

The  Board Certified Asia  Dentist Association  is one  agency  to  contact  if  you   want  to  obtain services  from   certified  dentists  in  Asia  at  an affordable  price.  They claim to be the only Asia dental  holiday   agency  that   represents  board certified Bangkok and Manila dentists exclusively.

CERTIFIED DENTISTS IN MEXICO - Save You On Dental Implants, Cosmetic Dentistry, Veneers And More!

You can have it all when you choose a Board Certified Dentist in Mexico - Affordable dentistry and the best dentists in Mexico!

Mexico dental prices for dental implants and mini implants are substantially less, but foreign patients need to be wary of the inexpensive dentist in mexico - most are not certified for advanced procedures. See the Mexico dentist prices on this page below published by the Board Certified Mexico Dentist Association.

Dental implants in Mexico are a fraction of the cost of implants in the USA and Canada.

Mexico Dental Prices by the Board Certified Mexico Dentist Association

Board Certified Mexico Dentist Association members use a standard pricing model.   You will find that dental prices in Mexico are 40 to 75% less  compared to dental costs in the USA or Canada.

In fact - certified specialists are often less than general dentists in Mexico who run retail dental clinics for foreigners performing advanced dentistry they are not certified for.

There's a big difference between the training and skills of a certified and a general dentist in Mexico. And foreign patients should be aware of this.

Board certified dentists  have had  2-6  additional  years  of  formal dental training leading up to certifications for their specialties. That's all in addition to their 4 years basic dental college and one additional year performing social service in a government clinic.

Some have more than one specialty - most have 3-4  they are qualified in as well as basic general dentistry. Most BCMD Association members are existing or former presidents of their respective dental specialist associations. When you select a member of the Board Certified Mexico Dentist Association you will be getting the best of the best dentists in Mexico.

Board Certified Mexico Dentist Association staff provides a number of services for our member dentist's foreign patients including:
  • Consultations, dental cost estimating
  • Dentist referrals, appointment setting
  • Dental vacation advice for accommodations and activities
  • Gratis clinic appointment ground transp. in certain locales

Our goal is to select the right dentist with the training necessary for each patient’s specific requirements in a given locale.

Our directors review and vet member applications. We don't have hundreds or thousands of dentists on file as some of the dental referral agencies claim they have, but we know all our dentists and can stand behind them.

When you select one of our members you can rest assured you won't have your complicated dentistry performed by a general dentist who is learning at your expense.

The Process: When we work with a patient on behalf of our members - we put together an estimate based on the patient's information and we recommend dentist(s) in the destination of their preference.  Not every certified dentist can perform every advanced dental procedure so it’s important to match up the patient's requirements with the dentist's skills.

We advise patients of any specials the dentist may have or things like gratis x-rays, clinic transportation or free whitenings  for large treatment patients or their companions.
